Educational
Testing Service (ETS)
and Touch Graphics worked together to produce ACED (Adaptive
Content for Evidence-based Diagnosis), an e-learning prototype
system under funding from NSF. The three-year project focuses
on ways to improve mathematics understanding and performance
for middle school students, especially those with visual disabilities.
The ACED system is a web-based diagnostic system that uses evidence-centered
design for task development and an adaptive algorithm for task
selection.
Touch
Graphics developed a diagnostic front-end that uses student-reported
preferences to establish which of three delivery methods are
most suitable to their visual function: mainstream (normally-sighted)
version; screen-magnified, color adjusted and audio enhanced
(low vision) version; or audio-tactile (blind) version. A series
of user tests was undertaken to study the effectiveness of this
approach and its potential value in actual assessments.
