Graphics, Inc.
and Exceptional
Teaching Inc. have teamed up to introduce SAL2, next-generation
braille literacy courseware that runs on the TTT.
Based on Dr. Sally Mangold’s original SAL (Speech Assisted
Learning) System, SAL2 is an interactive braille learning station
for blind students of all ages. Using the SAL2 System, students
can acquire new braille skills and enhance their braille reading
and writing. Students place a paper worksheet on the TTT, and
then follow simple instructions for using the system, as they
practice skills and develop proficiency in concepts introduced
by their teacher.
SAL2’s
“virtual instructor” provides encouraging audio
feedback, as students work their way through the lessons. They
work at their own pace, and may repeat lessons as many times
as necessary to achieve mastery of the material. The SAL2 System
records student performance and provides a teacher report on
individual student activities as well as an overview of student
progress. Using a “Main Menu”, teachers and students
select lessons to work on, place or go to “bookmarks”,
or make adjustments to settings, such as speech rate and pitch,
volume, and the firmness with which they must touch the TTT
to make it respond.
